Placement in the Best Companies: Apritude Test

Most organizations as well as many educational institutions use some form of psychological testing as part of their selection or employment procedure.

Testing has become routine because it is often perceived as essential, even though there may exist evidence of prior learning (school, college or professional qualifications) or previous experience (job record and other attainments).

The main reasons are:

• to give an indication of long-term potential for a course, training or job;

• to give up to date information;

• to provide data that is relevant and fair.

Employers and educational bodies are in a position to compare people’s performance on tests with other measures of success.

For these reasons what tests seek to discover is:

• What can you do now – have you got the ability?

• What potential have you – have you got the aptitude?

This workbook has a comprehensive range of tests of the types commonly presented to intending students and job applicants.

Master and Doctoral Studentship in Bioinformatics at German Cancer Research Center 2011

2011 Scholarships in   Theoretical Bioinformatics and Cellular Biology in DKFZ Germany

Study Subject:Bioinformatics and Cellular Mechanics
Employer: German Cancer Research Center
Level:Master/Doctoral
Scholarship Description:Mechanical factors play an important role in many basic biological phenomena on different spatial-temporal scales: from tissues and single cells to sub-cellular structures. The ability of cells to appropriately sense, process and utilize mechanical energy and signals is essential for the normal function of the entire organism. A number of severe disease, such as Cancer and Progeria, is known to be related to altered mechanical properties of the cellular matter. To reveal the mechanisms behind the observed mechanobiological phenomena, we develop novel approaches to quantitative analysis of cellular mechanics using a 3D image- and model-based framework.

Within the scope of the ongoing multidisciplinary project, the relationship between genotype and mechanical phenotype of the cell will be systematically investigated by means of the high-throughput screening of mechanical properties of RNAi-knockdowns. Successful candidate will be given the opportunity to carry out a state-of-the-art research work on an emerging, high-impact area of science between molecular biology, bioinformatics and biophysics. Work will be carried out in the division of Prof. Roland Eils within BioQuant, the Center for “Quantitative Analysis of Molecular and Cellular Biosystems” at Heidelberg University.

Scholarships in Germany in Structural Engineering

Vacancies for 10 PhD positions

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany. DFG – Research Training Group 1462

as of June 2011 / TV- L 13 E, max. 3 years

The research training group “Evaluation of Coupled Numerical Partial Models in Structural Engineering” is offering 10 positions for doctoral students for its second project phase. We are looking for inspired and dedicated individuals who are interested in doing research work in the multi-faceted field of structural engineering.

The overall aim of the Research training group is to assess the reliability, safety and robustness of numerical models. This evaluation considers a wide range of aspects and models. This includes, but is not restricted to, models that describe loads or the material and structural behavior of systems in structural engineering. Of particular interest are the interactions of these models in complex systems. Their influence on the quality of models of complex coupled systems is to be determined.

Basis for the research are the results that have been realized during the first project phase. Further research will be carried out in work groups of two to three PhD students under the guidance of two Postdoctoral students. Each doctoral student is supervised by three professors, two of which are professors in Weimar and the third being one of our international partners. Following an intensive training phase the participating doctoral students will develop the subject of their theses in collaboration with their supervisors. The combination of the models and methods of the specific projects then provides the means for handling the complex problems encountered in the working groups.

We expect excellent degrees from the applicants in one or several of the following subjects

Civil Engineering
Structural and Soil Mechanics/Dynamics
Materials Science
Applied Mathematics & Computer Science

We see ourselves as an international research training group. Very good English skills are a prerequisite for internal communication, for publications in scientific journals, and for a mandatory stay abroad, serving the scientific exchange with our international cooperation partners.

In order to allow a fast realization of models, of couplings, and of evaluation methods, command of one or several programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Python, Matlab) is of advantage.

The positions are available as of June till October 2011. Funding is granted for a maximum period of three years and is compensated according to TV/L 13 E. It is the aim of Bauhaus-Universität to increase to number of female scientists. Therefore women in particular are requested to apply. Handicapped people will be favored in case of equal qualification.
