Conditions
• Applicant must be from a country in transition or a developing country and must still be living there
• Hitherto no opportunity yet to work in Germany for an extended period of time
• Completion of professional study or training within the last five years
• Younger than 40 years old
• Applicant must no longer be studying or involved in on-the-job training
• Confirmation (in German) from a partner institution in Germany which has agreed to take on the scholar or initiate a joint project
• A reference from the applicant’s country of origin
• Knowledge of either German or English
• Basic Knowledge of German expected
• Applicants who were rejected once cannot re-apply

Selection procedure
• The Rave Foundation committee will assess all applications
• There is no recourse to legal action regarding the awarding of a scholarship
• Applicants will be informed in writing about whether their application was successful or not. No reasons will be given for the committee’s decision

2. Outline of the planned project in Germany (1 page)
3. Consent (in German) from a non-commercial German institution in which the applicant will work during the scholarship period in Germany
4. A letter of reference from the applicant’s home country
5. An abridged report (max. 2 pages) on the current state of the arts scene in the home country

Application date for scholarships is 15 September each year. Selections will be made within 3 months. Applications may be sent via e-mail or post. Should the application be sent via e-mail the original letter of consent and the original letter of reference should still be handed in by post later.

Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) is an independent centre for interdisciplinary research on the history, societies and cultures of the Middle East, Africa, Central, South and Southeast Asia, and Europe. The focus is on influences, perspectives and connections of the south, notably of Muslims and their neighbours. The centre currently employs about 35 research fellows, the majority of them historians, students of Islam and anthropologists, from a variety of countries.

Within its research programme „Muslim Worlds �” World of Islam? Concepts, Practices and Crises of the Global”, ZMO announces the opening of five research positions for PhD holders who will be expected to reside in Berlin. They should situate their work within the research programme of ZMO (see http://www.zmo.de/forschung/projekte_2008/gruppenposter.pdf) and be prepared to contribute actively to the overall programme of the Centre in addition to pursuing their personal project.

ZMO wishes to particularly encourage applications with a regional focus on Africa and Southeast Asia. In addition to the disciplines already represented at ZMO, we encourage specialists from other disciplines such as Sociology, Cultural Geography and Economic History/Economic Anthropology to apply. Study in Germany: Doctoral Fellowships Of Dresden Leibniz Graduate School

The DLGS – Dresden Leibniz Graduate School is a joint activity of the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development, Dresden (IÖR), the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), and the Academy for Spatial Research and Planning, Hanover (ARL).Beginning in January 2012, the DLGS announces eight doctoral fellowships for three years as the third cohort of the Graduate School.

Doctoral students will focus on new concepts for managing change for sustainable urban and regional development. A detailed description of research lines and topics can be found here.

In general, the first year of the structured programme is devoted to intensive work in courses and on the doctoral thesis. The second year is dedicated to empirical work (incl. field work). The third year is oriented towards facilitating the completion of the doctoral thesis. In individual cases, this general schedule may vary according to the specific needs of the candidate.

Workshops, e.g. about quantitative and qualitative methods, international events, and summer schools offer opportunities to acquire special skills and general competencies. The interdisciplinary composition of the group and the support provided by DLGS partners as well as possible research visits abroad enable graduates to rapidly complete innovative doctorates.

Eligibility

This announcement addresses excellent graduates (with M.A., M.Sc., or equivalent, with a master thesis, and a grade equal to „good“ (2) or better according to the German grading system) in Spatial Planning (including City and Regional Planning, Urban Regeneration, Landscape Planning, Traffic Planning), Geography, and Economics.

Applications from outside of Germany are particularly welcome.All applicants must be capable of fluently speaking and writing English (in general proved by an official certificate or equivalent), and of cooperating in teams. Successful applicants must take up residence in Dresden, and be regularly / daily present at DLGS premises during working hours. Fellowship holders must comply with the regulations for a doctoral degree enacted by the relevant faculties of the Technische Universität Dresden.

International JEF Seminar in Helsinki

"Fixing a hole – closing the gaps in democracy!" is an international seminar organised by JEF-Europe and JEF-Finland in Helsinki, the capital of Finland from 22 until 28 October 2011.

To which extend and how is Europe’s youth involved into the democratic procedures on the local, regional, national, European and global level? How can the decreasing demographic weight and a lowering democratic participation be addressed? In which extend do the conventions and charters on rights promoted by the Council of Europe promote the democratic empowerment of young generations? Which is the contribution of youth work to the development of social responsibilities?

The participants of the seminar ‘Fixing a hole – closing the gaps in democracy’ will study and try to find the answer to these questions. In a dynamic exchange with elected representatives and youth leaders at local, national and European level, participants will have the possibility to understand differences within Europe and between our continent and the rest of the world and exchange good practices. Participants will study in which extent different legal, educational and communicational measures can promote youth participation and youth representation in society at local, national and transnational level and promote democratic and social inclusion.

The working methodology is based on a combination of non-formal and formal education methods and on a strong interaction with democratic and civil society representatives. A ahole day will be dedicated to a simulation of an international decision-making process. The seminar will also provide a range of leisure activities in the city of Helsinki enjoying the rich European history and culture this city has to offer.

History or background of Ivan Fisk Memorial Scholarships 2011
The scholarships are named in recognition of the late Ivan Fisk, for his efforts to help New Zealander’s complete engineering apprenticeships and advance their careers to higher national qualifications.

Purpose of award
The Ivan Fisk Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship fund designed to provide financial assistance to advance your career in mechanical engineering or in a commerce related subject area of NZQA Level 5, Diploma or Degree level.

Selection criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

* Completed an (NZQA) Level 4 National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering through the apprenticeship programme
*Apprentices that are currently in their final year of their apprenticeship are also encouraged to apply.
* Be a New Zealand Citizen or have New Zealand Residency
* Be residing and intending to study in New Zealand during 2011
* Must undertake or start the prescribed chosen course of study within 12 months

Who should apply?

The successful applicants will have completed a National Certificate Level 4 Mechanical Engineering qualification through an apprenticeship. You will also be focussing on studying for a NZQA Certificate, Diploma or Degree in 2011 at Level 5 and above to advance your career to higher national qualifications.

Apprentices who are in their final year of their apprenticeship programme are also eligible and encouraged to apply.
